Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus

The Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity Across the Nexus (CECAN), is a £3m research centre hosted by the University of Surrey, which is working to transform the practice of policy appraisal and evaluation in Nexus areas, to make it fit for a complex world.

CECAN aims to encourage knowledge sharing and capacity building amongst those working in UK policy making and is pioneering, testing and promoting innovative  approaches and methods across Nexus domains such as food, energy, water and the environment, through a series of ‘real-life’ case study projects with its partners (DEFRA, BEIS, FSA and EA).

We were one of only two non-academic partners in the formation of CECAN and continue to work with them, and their commercial arm CECAN ltd) on new developments emerging from the original research centre.
